Intermediate Shibari

Level 3

Shibari or Kinbaku is the art of erotic Japanese Rope Bondage – beautiful and engaging, it has a rich history and deep roots in Japanese culture.

Japanese style rope bondage is based on several fundamental elements. Once you understand these elements they can be used as building blocks to construct increasing elaborate forms. For those who have completed the Studio Kink Shibari Fundamentals Course these progressions will expand your skills and repertoire.

Requirements

  • Required knowledge: Shibari Fundamentals

  • Rope: 6-10 or more of your own pieces of jute (per person tying)

  • We recommend having a partner to tie for the intermediate progression in order to practice hands on and receive guidance.

Classes

This course is offered in the following formats.

  • A series of 4 classes. One each Thursday night beginning at 7pm and ending by 9pm. There is a teaching component and time for supervised practice. The first class of the course starts on the first Thursday of each month.

  • A Saturday or Sunday Intensive. On selected weekends we run an intensive version of this course. It is the same content as the Thursday night version just condensed. This intensive can vary in start time/duration and could be either an 10am start and finish at 1pm, or alternatively start at 1:30pm and finish at 4:30pm (see available dates/times below).

The Studio Kink Team can also arrange private one on one tuition to cover the same content. For more information about this option please contact a Studio Kink Team member here.

Content

Each month will focus on a specific harness or style, see the drop down menus below for detailed descriptions for our 2024 content.

  • Have you ever heard the Shibari adage - You have to fly on the floor before you can fly in the air?

Floor rope can easily be left behind as we enter the big beautiful world of Shibari, with advanced patterns and fancy suspensions often more attractive than rope fundamentals. However those fundamentals elevate every scene, whether it’s a one-rope floor tie or a 10 position transition sequence. In this course we use simple patterns to understand how different rope techniques impact a scene - everything from body mechanics to effortless tension to bulletproof hair rope.

Presenting this course in June will be Ben Ryan/rye_jute. Ben discovered Shibari 6 years ago in an intro class at Studio Kink. He quickly fell in love with the connective power of rope, and over time came to understand the beautiful balance of the three core elements: rope, bunny, rigger. After lockdown in 2020 and much consultation with the SK team, Ben created this as his first intermediate-level course, and it remains one of his favourites to teach.

    CONTENT

Over 4 weeks we will cover many techniques and ties, and how to use these with intention, including:

    - How body mechanics affect bondage and breath
    - Hair, toe, finger, face, gag, crotch rope… sometimes with one rope!
    - Wiggle game - what rope structures actually secure a bunny
    - Classic floor positions and why they work
    - Simple harnesses and sequences - one rope harnesses, chest and leg ties etc
    - The jute coloured line between sensual and torture ties
    - Incorporating music, fragrance, toys
    - Plenty of laughs along the way

Each week will include discussion of consent and safety, both relevant to the ties and generally applied to power exchange. Class discussion is always encouraged as these are the pillars of healthy Shibari.

The goal isn’t to walk out with a few floor skills, but to walk out with connective and powerful tools you can bring to any scene. We hope to see you there!

  • This four-week class explores partial suspension techniques, empowering you to expose, immobilise, or control your rope bottom for a unique rope play experience. It offers opportunities to elevate your skills and is beneficial for both novice and experienced models and riggers, enhancing your understanding of body mechanics applicable to various forms of rope play.

Topics covered include a floorwork and partials chest harness, along with exercises and sequences to enhance your proficiency in navigating partial suspensions. Often viewed as a stepping stone to full suspension, this class highlights how partial suspensions can be a distinct and fulfilling way to engage in rope scenes. By removing certain constraints associated with full suspension, these techniques open up possibilities for creative rope play that may not be achievable otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to wear?

We recommend comfortable, casual clothing that allows you freedom of movement. What you would wear to the gym or yoga would be fine.

Do I need to come with a partner?

While not required, we strongly recommend bringing someone to practice with. In order to learn how to tie with the correct tension and adapt the tie to individuals, practicing in class and receiving feedback from an instructor is invaluable. If you do not come with a partner you will be unable to participate in the hands on components of the course.

What if I don't have a partner to bring?

If you don’t have a friend to bring you might want to arrange to partner with another student and share class time as rigger/bottom.  We recommend you get to know other students in your Introduction to Shibari or Shibari Fundamentals classes, speak to the teacher or put a message on our fetlife group or facebook page/group.

Do I need any previous experience?

Yes. You need to be proficient with the content of our Introduction to Shibari + Shibari Fundamentals courses.

Do I need to bring rope?

Yes. Each person intending to tie needs to bring at least 6 pieces of 7m to 8m length jute rope. If you are unsure if your rope is suitable then please have a chat with one of the Studio Kink Team members.

Where can I purchase rope?

Studio Kink stocks natural, red, purple or pink jute (pending current stock) in 8m lengths. Alternatively you can also pre-purchase ahead of time from here.

What if I can’t make four Thursday nights in a row?

We also try to offer this course in an intensive format one Saturday per month (where scheduling and teacher availability allows). If you can’t make one of the weekly classes throughout the month, then please discuss with the instructor to find out what you have missed. Alternatively you can book a private class with the instructor to catch up or book into the Saturday Intensive.

How do I find Studio Kink?

Check out the location page. Studio Kink is located in an access controlled building. Doors open 15 minutes before classes are scheduled to start. If you have not been to the Studio before we recommend coming 10 minutes before class starts so that you have plenty of time to find the entrance and so that a team member can show you around the Studio before class starts.

Do I need to buy a ticket for my practice partner even if they are not tying?

For all Studio Kink events unless explicitly stated otherwise, tickets are per person. This has been factored into the cost of tickets. We believe in doing this for a few reasons:

  • Sometimes people don’t want to come as couples, they can come as onesomes, twoesomes or moresomes.

  • When people do come with a partner we don’t assume that one partner is covering the full cost. We encourage people to work this out between themselves but believe by not bundling tickets this makes it easier.

  • We believe that top, bottom, rigger, model, bunny, switch or anything in between are of equal importance we are an equal opportunity teaching studio and everybody learns something from whichever role they assume.
